As of December 18, 2023, experimentation of the issuance of the Electronic Identity Card for Italian citizens residing in our consular district will be launched
The new Electronic Identity Card is a multifunctional document: it certifies the citizen’s identity, is a travel document within the EU, carries the tax code and can be used to request an identity on the SPID (Sistema Pubblico di Identità Digitale) system with which to access Services provided by Italian Public Administrations.
For more details on the services offered by C.I.E., how to activate it and how to use it, see the Ministry of the Interior website
https://www.cartaidentita.interno.gov.it/en/home/
– Since this is an experimental phase, the number of appointments is very limited for now;
– The C.I.E. is not issued at sight by this Consular Office, but is mailed to the applicant’s home by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato. Therefore, the issuance time does not depend on this Consulate;
– Application for C.I.E. can be made only if you are not in possession of any Electronic Identity Card (possession of only paper Identity Card, first issuance, loss or theft) or in case of C.I.E. expiring within the period of 6 months from the date of application.
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLYING FOR AN ELECTRONIC IDENTITY CARD
For the purpose of issuing the C.I.E. it is essential that the applicant:
– Be registered with AIRE in his/her municipality and is a resident in the consular district of this Consulate;
– In the case of citizens born abroad, the birth certificate must have been transcribed in Italy, as the details of the transcription must be indicated on the C.I.E;
– Have a Fiscal Code. Those who do not have a Codice Fiscale are invited to consult the appropriate Codice Fiscale section of this website https://conschicago.esteri.it/it/servizi-consolari-e-visti/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano/codice-fiscale/
– Have updated your position in the consular files in case of change of address, change of marital status. For appropriate verifications or registrations/updates, please refer to the sections of this website:
HOW TO REQUEST APPOINTMENT FOR ELECTRONIC IDENTITY CARD APPLICATION
In order to apply for the issuance of the E.I.C., it is necessary for the interested party to appear in person at the consulate after booking an appointment to be made using the Prenot@mi platform, Travel Documents/ Identity Card service.
Please enter in the notes field the details of the document applicant, if different from the registered user, when making the appointment reservation.
In case of request for minor, the parent will need to create the account on the booking system and enter the minor’s information in the notes field.
It is recommended that married women enter their maiden personal details (as shown on the birth certificate).
The appointment is single and personal.
In the event that, as a result of verifications, obstructive reasons emerge for the issuance of the C.I.E. (see section mandatory requirements) it will be ‘care of this office to inform the person concerned also in order to cancel the’ appointment.
DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED FOR THE ISSUANCE OF THE ELECTRONIC IDENTITY CARD:
(rates through June 30, 2023).
MAILING OF ELECTRONIC IDENTITY CARD
As indicated, the C.I.E. is not issued on the day of the appointment: instead, it will be sent from Italy by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, directly to the address indicated by the applicant.
In case of non-delivery due to wrong address or exhaustion of the storage period at the post office, the envelope is returned to the Consulate for further delivery attempts.
1. To whom can the Electronic Identity Card be issued?
The Consulate can receive requests for issuance of the C.I.E. only from Italian citizens regularly residing in this consular district with full AIRE registration.
